Airport: Zurich ( 1 hr by train) or Geneva ( 2 hr by train) Both are frequent and (mostly) direct services. Bern airport is small and you are unlikely to find many flights here.
Trains: www.sbb.ch (international services from Germany, Italy, France, etc) Swiss trains are generally punctual, clean and efficient.
In Bern: There is an excellent public transport network of trams, buses and the urban train system (S-bahn). Hotel reservations usually include a travel pass for the city (which can be used to get to your hotel in Bern too.) Check with your hotel if in doubt.

Hotels: We recommend using a site like Booking.com or Agoda or Trivago to find and book a hotel in Bern.
Bern is very lovely but it is really small for a capital city thus its hotels can get booked up quickly. Booking ahead is highly advisable. Expect to pay between 150-250 francs a night for a 3/4 star hotel. You can pay less for something more basic of course.
In terms of location it doesn't really matter where you as the public transport system is very reliable and extensive.
